Okkio Cafe: disappointing & overrated café in Ho Chi Minh City

Café-hopping is one of the best things to do in Ho Chi Minh City. It’s little wonder then that we thought it would be a good idea to visit one of the frequently recommended cafés in the city.

Our Okkio Cafe experience

Okkio Cafe has received raving reviews on TripAdvisor and Google Maps for its coffee and lovely ambience.

The cafe is tucked upstairs in a small building – you’ll need to climb some narrow stairs up to get to the cafe. I found it a little inconvenient, but I guess that adds to the charm?

The cafe itself is very nicely furnished to look as cosy and warm as possible. There are lots of books on the shelves, which you can grab to read while waiting for and having your meal.

As you can see, the café was quite empty during our visit. We probably went too early when it just opened. It got a little more crowded afterwards!

Unfortunately we both weren’t feeling very well that day (after effect of eating at Pasteur Street Brewing Company, which I’ll talk more about in another post).

We ordered just a small cup of coffee and a cake. I can’t remember what the coffee was. The cake was probably a cheesecake.

I was quite surprised to see that the portions were so incredibly small. I understand if the coffee cup is small, but the cake slice was also very thin and very flat.

Very skinny and small slice of cake

I didn’t find the cheesecake particularly tasty. It seemed that a good part of it was just flour rather than cheese, which was quite disappointing.

The coffee was also quite subpar. Having tried much better and stronger coffee from places such as XLIII Coffee and even the markets, I didn’t know what to make of this cup.

Is Okkio Cafe worth visiting?

If you take a closer look at the reviews on Okkio Cafe, you’d realise that the reviews are a mixed bag. Most of them clearly love the coffee & pastries, and the ambience of the place.

However, some do point out that the food here is terribly overpriced. The coffee is not always great, and the customer service varies from excellent to awful.

It seems that the service level and quality of food & drinks at Okkio Cafe is pretty inconsistent. Unfortunately, our visit probably timed with a day when everything is not at its best.

I know for sure that I won’t be coming back to this café. You can take your chances though!

About Me

Hi! I’m Tofu V from Singapore.

My love for Korea stemmed from a love of K-pop and K-dramas that started more than a decade ago. I’ve been fortunate enough to visit Korea both as a tourist and a student. I’ve accumulated interesting experiences (mostly good, occasionally bad) along the way as I try my best to see as much of Korea as possible, and this blog is an accumulation of all that I’ve learned and tried.
