Lin Dong Fang Beef Noodles 林东芳牛肉面: Taiwan’s Michelin-approved icon

, ,

I’ve tried a variety of beef noodles from different shops across different countries. But the one that is possibly the most memorable is none other than Lin Dong Fang Beef Noodles, located in Taipei.

Even foodies like DanielFoodDiary refer to it as the best Taiwanese beef noodles in Taipei!

I believe they might have relocated during our first trip there in 2019, when they moved to a bigger storefront in Zhongshan District. The queue was really long, despite having more than one floor!

What to order at Lin Dong Fang Beef Noodles

As the name suggests, you’d definitely want to order a bowl of beef noodles at this Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant.

You get to pick from a dizzying choice of:

  • Beef Noodles (NT$160, NT$190)
  • Half Tendon Half Beef Noodles (NT$210, NT$260)
  • Beef Tripe Noodles (NT$210, NT$240)
  • Beef Tendon Noodles (NT$240, NT$270)

It really boils down (pun intended) to your choice of beef parts. I’m a little more conservative, so I ordered the beef noodles. If you’ve never heard of some of these parts before and want to keep things safe, I recommend you do the same as well.

I find it quite endearing how they use a bowl lacquered with their restaurant name and the soup level just touching it – perfect for taking photos of.

Some people prefer the hong shao noodles, which uses tender red braised beef. The taste is much richer and arguably more aromatic.

However, my personal favourite has always been this type of beef noodles served by Lin Dong Fang. It is clean but flavourful, made even better by the lean beef meat that easily melts in your mouth.

The stock is said to be cooked over 20 hours, using beef bones and a secret blend of herbs. Amazing how it isn’t overly oily or greasy despite the rich ingredients used!

You can also see that the noodles are quite thick and chewy, or as the Taiwanese describe it, QQ!

Lanzhou beef noodles tend to use thinner la mian, but I find that Lin Dong Fang’s chewier noodles are much more palatable.

I remembered slurping up this bowl of noodles and half regretting not taking the time to savour it further.

Thankfully, I got the chance to eat it again a few months later!

On my second trip, I found that the beef slices they served were noticeably fattier. I didn’t mind it too much. As long as the soup was just as savoury as it should be!

Is it worth eating at Lin Dong Fang Beef Noodles?

Based on my experience, the queues at Lin Dong Fang can get rather long during meal times, and there’s no way around it as they don’t take reservations.

Customer service here is also not highly representative of the friendly attitudes you might be expecting in Taiwan. It’s not exactly rude – I find it just a little more hurried as they need to clear tables fast.

Other than these nitty gritty bits, I would say that it’s definitely worth getting your fix of Taiwanese beef noodles here. There’s nothing much to pick on, from the delightful soup to the just-right beef and noodles.

I also find the price point fairly reasonable for a hearty bowl of delicious beef noodles. Not the cheapest, but certainly within budget!

About Me

Hi! I’m Tofu V from Singapore.

My love for Korea stemmed from a love of K-pop and K-dramas that started more than a decade ago. I’ve been fortunate enough to visit Korea both as a tourist and a student. I’ve accumulated interesting experiences (mostly good, occasionally bad) along the way as I try my best to see as much of Korea as possible, and this blog is an accumulation of all that I’ve learned and tried.
