There’s no doubt that you would, at some point in your Vietnam trip, encounter Banh Mi. I belonged to the camp who actively sought the dish out and ate it as and when I could.
Banh Mi is a Vietnamese baguette (yes, it really is) that contains meat and vegetables from native Vietnamese cuisine. There was a period of time where I would frequently eat it in Singapore because I was very addicted, so I knew I had to have it in Vietnam.
I had marked out a few famous Banh Mi eateries in Ho Chi Minh prior to my trip – unfortunately I never got around to visiting them as they were either out of the way or had odd opening times.
Luckily, I still managed to get my Banh Mi fix at My Banh Mi Saigon!
What to eat at My Banh Mi Saigon
We hadn’t realised that this restaurant is actually very famous in Vietnam. We randomly found this on Google Maps and saw that it had very good ratings, so we decided to give it a shot.
The restaurant is near one of the tourist attractions (couldn’t remember which), and hence it was filled with international travellers. The place is pretty small, but it felt cozy rather than suffocating.
Despite the name, the menu actually offers a lot more than just Banh Mi. However, we stuck to ordering its specialties and got the Bánh Mì Bò Mỹ (Charcoal Grilled USDA Choice Hanger Steak) & Gỏi Cuốn Tôm Thịt (Fresh Hand Rolls Shrimp), along with some Vietnamese iced black coffee.

Bánh Mì Bò Mỹ features thin slices of charcoal grilled USDA Choice Hanger Steak layered on a warm, freshly baked oven crisp baguette. It is also garnished with cucumbers, green onions, cilantro, and sliced chili on a bed of pork pate.
If the description alone sounds delicious already, you can be sure that the actual food tastes just as great. The steak was juicy and flavourful, paired with the crispy baguettes that somehow didn’t taste very dry. The garnishing, however, was the cherry on top, giving the Banh Mi the extra oomph that made all the difference.
I could certainly tell why this was My Banh Mi Saigon’s star dish!
If you’re fans of Vietnam coffee, you’ll also enjoy how strong their brew is. As much as I enjoyed the caffeine kick, I did kind of wish that I had tried the iced coffee with condensed milk instead.
