St Kilda Beach: what to do at Melbourne’s most famous beach

,

6km away and a short tram ride away from the CBD is one of Melbourne’s most iconic beaches: St Kilda Beach.

I put this on my Melbourne bucket list but kept putting it off until the day before our departure! We visited this near the evening time on a very cloudy day, hoping to be able to catch the sunset on the beachfront.

What to do at St Kilda Beach

Beyond the beach, St Kilda itself is actually a neighbourhood (?) filled with activities other than just the beach. Attractions here include Luna Park, which is a family-friendly amusement park that features rollercoaster rides and arcade games.

However, what I understand is that most of these are usually only open on Fridays and the weekends.

The beach, however, is a different story!

Even in the thick of winter, you’ll find many people having a good time at St Kilda Beach. Many people, both locals and tourists, come here to walk their dogs, jog, ride bicycles, rollerblade, and swim.

Caught this lady walking her dog along the whole stretch of the beach, and her dog was so cute! Cue all the photos of her and her dog:

People also frolick in the water during winter

It was a little unfortunate that we came on such a cloudy day, but our timing was just nice to catch the sunset!

We still managed to catch some of the golden hour peeking out from behind the clouds, which was still quite a gorgeous sight to behold. I highly recommend staying to watch the sun set as well if you’re planning to visit St Kilda Beach in the afternoon-evening time!

What to eat at St Kilda Beach

Of course, no beach is complete without refreshment options.

St Kilda Beach offers lots of choices with a good long stretch of bars and restaurants for you to pick from. You can either choose to dine in, or order takeout and have it along the beachfront.

I would say be a little careful about eating your chips at the beach though! You’re pretty safe eating them within the F&B establishments, but anywhere outside and there’s no guarantee that your food won’t get whisked away by those pesky seagulls.

(This reminded me of Wolmido Island and the multitudes of people feeding them, which makes me shudder.)

The seagulls wait around for a chance to nip at your chips

Beachcomber Cafe and Beach Bar

We saw that one of the establishments at St Kilda Beach, Beachcomber Cafe and Beach Bar, was having some really good promotion with beer (not that I could enjoy it, unfortunately).

It seemed to boast a pretty good view of the beach and the sunset as well. Hence, we headed in to have our dinner.

I spotted this amazing gelato bar at a corner of the café where they had the most colourful gelato I had ever seen. The flavours actually sound quite decent. But the colour combinations were seriously very whacky.

Despite knowing it’s probably just a whole load of artificial colouring, I do kind of regret not trying it!

Between the both of us, we shared a pizza and chicken souvlaki. Drinks-wise, my partner got a beer and I got a kiwi mocktail.

I had to admit it, I was quite impressed when they served the chicken souvlaki. I rarely eat Greek dishes as they’re not that common in Singapore, but the plating was enough to make me drool.

Their grilled chicken skewers were some of the most tender chicken breasts I had ever tasted. This is coming from someone who regularly eats chicken and have eaten from a whole variety of brands and places!

You can tell that the chicken is very well-grilled with a nice smokey flavour, without being dry at all. The tzatziki sauce was also sour in a very addictive way, and I ended up dipping all my chicken in it.

I hadn’t expected the food at this random F&B establishment to be so tasty, which was such a pleasant surprise!

The views, however, were not as great as we had hoped. This was partly because we sat indoors and it was covered by some plastic sheet. It was also because the clouds simply didn’t work in our favour.

Is St Kilda Beach worth visiting?

Nonetheless, we ended our day at St Kilda Beach feeling really satisfied from the cool breeze, great views, and fantastic food.

I would love to come back again. Perhaps I will time my visit on a sunnier day, and see if we can catch even better sunset views.

P.S. if you visit in summer, you may even get to watch the surfers in action – though the crowds will also be considerably thicker!

Hi! I’m Tofu V from Singapore.

My love for Korea stemmed from a love of K-pop and K-dramas that started more than a decade ago. I’ve been fortunate enough to visit Korea both as a tourist and a student. I’ve accumulated interesting experiences (mostly good, occasionally bad) along the way as I try my best to see as much of Korea as possible, and this blog is an accumulation of all that I’ve learned and tried.
