Zhongshe Flower Market 中社觀光花市: popular Taichung flower farm

,

If you belong to the crowd who enjoys chasing Insta-worthy tourist destinations, or simply have a penchant for flowers, you’d most likely put Zhongshe Flower Market on your Taichung itinerary.

I had seen tons of gorgeous photos taken at this famous Taichung flower market. The European-style gardens and seasonal flowers are frequently photographed! I told my friends that we should definitely include this in our trip, since we had not much sightseeing planned anyway.

What to see & do at Zhongshe Flower Market

Unfortunately, we had not checked the weather forecast before planning our visit.

We ended up visiting Zhongshe Flower Market on one of the worst days possible. Not only was it dark and cloudy, it was POURING!

We didn’t think of going there via taxi and made our way by train, so we had to brave a long walk from the station to the farm. I also ended up with the most gloomy photos of the sea of flowers.

Tragic.

Everything was just dark and gloomy

It was, however, pretty clear that other tourists got the weather memo, because the farm was almost void of humans.

I’m not sure why the staff didn’t bother turning us away when the experience would be so lacklustre. We didn’t want to waste our efforts getting to the flower market though, so we made the best of it by exploring the grounds while clinging on to our umbrellas.

We didn’t really get the time to slowly observe the flowers and read the signs – no one would do that in the pouring rain! But I did manage to get a few snaps here & there:

The highlight of Zhongshe Flower Market is probably the white piano in the sea of flowers. From what I understand, the flowers in the flower bed tend to change with the seasons. During our visit in the spring/summer, it was lavender!

The setup would have made for gorgeous photos, if not for the fact that everything was grey and wet!!!

I couldn’t believe the white piano looked so dirty. No idea if it always looked so poorly maintained or it just looked that way because of the rain. Either way, it looked nothing like those Instagram shots.

Other than flowers, the market also boasts vegetable & fruit produce. Hearsay you even get to harvest strawberries in selected months!

Pumpkins galore

Is it worth visiting Zhongshe Flower Market?

I understand that experiences and reviews are wildly subjective. Yet, I couldn’t help but feel that our trip to Zhongshe Flower Market was a huge waste of time and effort.

Admittedly, most of it boiled down to the fact that we didn’t do our homework and ended up visiting during poor weather. I visited a similar flower garden in Jeju (Camellia Hill) and it was a stark difference, thanks to the gorgeous snow.

I’m not sure if I would return in future as the experience is so highly dependent on the weather. But I definitely recommend getting a good pulse on the weather forecast before heading down. Any sign of rain = skip this attraction for good!

The flowers are truly stunning. Too bad the weather wasn’t good for you. I’m sure the flowers enjoyed the rain though. I’m glad you made it there and back safely. Traveling in the rain is the worst, thanks for snapping some photos and for giving us a head’s up!

My love for Korea stemmed from a love of K-pop and K-dramas that started more than a decade ago. I’ve been fortunate enough to visit Korea both as a tourist and a student. I’ve accumulated interesting experiences (mostly good, occasionally bad) along the way as I try my best to see as much of Korea as possible, and this blog is an accumulation of all that I’ve learned and tried.
