오후 ohu: good steak rice & bibimbap in Seoul Forest

I realised Grandmother’s Recipe has become the go-to restaurant for not just locals but also tourists in recent years. This is partly due to the number of bloggers and media outlets that have been raving about their food – which I have to say is well-deserved!

I ate at Grandmother’s Recipe in 2022 but sadly couldn’t get a seat when I returned in 2023. We were pretty hungry so we had no choice but to find another restaurant nearby to fill our tummies.

Luckily for us, the Seongsu/Seoul Forest area was full of amazing cafes and restaurants. We decided to try this quaint-looking restaurant opposite Grandmother’s Recipe, next to Today’s Enough Espresso Bar, called 오후 ohu.

One of their best-selling dishes was the steak bowl, as well as the bibimbap set.

They were REALLY generous with the beef steak. I tried some from my travel companion and was floored by how delicious it was.

Their bibimbap was very different from the version served at Grandmother’s Recipe, it looked a lot more like the typical dish you would see at other restaurants. However, I had to give them props for the minced beef that they used because it was seriously very addictive.

If you notice the rice they serve, it’s also not the typical white/pearl rice! I’m guessing it’s some mixed grain rice which really amps up the health factor of this bibimbap.

Overall we both agreed that it was quite a good meal – the meat in particular was very flavourful and undeniably the star of each dish. However, as compared to Grandmother’s Recipe, the food at ohu does feel like there’s still something lacking.

Another point worth noting is that service at ohu is a bit slow even though it’s not very packed. It seems their kitchen is small and there’s only one chef cooking.

Given a choice, I would still prefer to eat at Grandmother’s Recipe, but this was not a bad restaurant on its own! I really liked the beef they serve here because it’s so tender and packed with flavour.

I took a quick look at their Naver Map photos but it seemed like most people ordered their salmon rice with avocado, so you can check that out too!
