Cafés may be aplenty in Melbourne, but what a lot of locals flock to are the Asian eateries.
For starters, Asian food is typically cheaper than that of Western fare, if you don’t count the fancy restaurants serving fusion or polished versions of it. It’s certainly more expensive than if you were to eat it in Asia, but in retrospect it’s still a good way to save money.
I tried to avoid eating Asian food often when we were in Melbourne. I simply didn’t see much value in paying more to eat something I could get for much cheaper (and maybe tastier) in Singapore. However, there was one particular food I made an exception for: KBBQ!
Melbourne is home to a rather large Korean diaspora, and with it came a dizzying array of Korean cuisine. We realised that eating KBBQ here was extremely worth it because the meat (particularly the beef) was definitely going to be cheaper than that in Singapore.
We found a place near our hotel called BBQ King Melbourne that had pretty good reviews on Google Maps. The only problem was that the queues were always long, especially on Friday & weekend nights!

Our strategy was to go early on a weekday night to try and beat the queue. We couldn’t totally escape from queueing, but thankfully it wasn’t too long. We were very lucky that a group of people gave up halfway and left haha.
The restaurant was already pretty crowded by the time we entered. They were relatively well-staffed and it didn’t take the staff too long to attend to us and set up the BBQ.

Dinner at BBQ King Melbourne runs from 5-11pm, and offers the following in the buffet:
- Premium beef and pork
- Japanese sushi and roll
- Various Korean foods including tteokbokki, kimchi stew, Korean pancakes, japchae, Korean chicken, bulgogi, etc
- Salads and desserts
My rule of thumb is to avoid carbs as much as possible so that we can fill up on proteins, hence we didn’t take any of the sushi available. We did, however, take many plates of meat!
Unlike some BBQ buffet places that offer limited cheap cuts, BBQ King Melbourne is very generous with the types of meat they offer. We had a hearty time filling our stomachs with plate after plate of beef, pork, and even seafood like prawns!
The meat in general is quite well-marinated and of good quality, so you won’t be disappointed by dry and tough barbecued meat.

Not pictured above were the ice creams we had after filling our bellies with all the protein we could!
Was it worth eating at BBQ King Melbourne?
For dinner, you’ll be paying AUD49.90 per adult, while kids aged 4-9 pay AUD29.90.
While it’s not the cheapest meal option out there, I think it’s definitely worth the price when you consider the wide variety of ingredients available, the good-quality meat, and of course the fact that you can eat until you’re really full.
I honestly felt that you get a lot out of this buffet if you’re a meat lover and/or you’re eating for two (aka me, 5 months pregnant and absolutely famished).
However, do take note that drinks are not free-flow, but the good news is that you can take iced water for free!
