K-Museum of Contemporary Art: overpriced private art gallery

,

I’ve previously shared about some of the museums around Seoul that offer free admission. But other than those, there are also quite a number of privately-owned museums & art galleries!

We wanted to give one of the private art galleries a shot since we had never visited one before. After some research we found the K-Museum of Contemporary Art, located in the affluent Gangnam neighbourhood.

It was rather quiet as we went right when it opened, but it did attract a fair bit of visitors over time!

A rather unassuming entrance for the art gallery

There were a few exhibits available, but what really threw us off-guard was the fact that you had to pay almost USD 22-25 PER EXHIBIT! It worked out to be really expensive as we paid for four people to enter. So beware if you are coming here thinking this was going to be affordable!

Exhibits at the K-Museum of Contemporary Art

The main exhibit for the 2023 winter season was the Peter Pan’s First Love exhibition.

We didn’t really know what to expect from such art galleries. This turned out to be a huge Instagram-worthy space with plenty of photo ops.

I had to admit that everything looked very gorgeous and quite well put-together. It was, however, a bit disconcerting that we were paying KRW22,000 per person for what seemed to be just a lot of Instagram-worthy displays.

What was also a bit odd was that we were actually allocated time slots to visit the other exhibits. I think the staff might be trying to ensure that the exhibits aren’t overly crowded. But this meant that we didn’t have enough time to finish the Peter Pan exhibition and were ushered on to the other exhibits that we paid for.

The next few ones we went to were the art exhibits for Chun Hyuk Lim, Pablo Picasso, and Andy Warhol. These were actual exhibits of their artwork, accompanied by thoughtful discourse on their art styles, personal lives, and public opinion.

I actually liked their feature of Andy Warhol more than the Peter Pan exhibit. The Andy Warhol exhibit had a very interesting take on his art style and stance on consumerism! It was a pity though that we weren’t allowed to take any photos.

Was it worth visiting the K-Museum of Contemporary Art?

All in all, I would say that visiting the K-Museum of Contemporary Art was an interesting experience. Nonetheless, I don’t foresee that I’ll be coming back any time soon due to the high entrance fees and odd ushering.

Would still recommend visiting K-Museum of Contemporary Art if you’re keen on the arts scene and want to check out one of Korea’s private art galleries!

About Me

Hi! I’m Tofu V from Singapore.

My love for Korea stemmed from a love of K-pop and K-dramas that started more than a decade ago. I’ve been fortunate enough to visit Korea both as a tourist and a student. I’ve accumulated interesting experiences (mostly good, occasionally bad) along the way as I try my best to see as much of Korea as possible, and this blog is an accumulation of all that I’ve learned and tried.
