We didn’t actually plan to eat here, but a) our Sinchon 9000 won buffet was nowhere to be found, and b) we wanted to eat KBBQ, because – well, because where else would we eat it, if not Korea?

For the unacquainted, Kang Ho Dong is a very famous TV host and comedian in South Korea, so it can become quite a game of ‘celebrity spotting’ when it comes to eating in these celebrity-owned restaurants.

We actually walked past this restaurant quite a few times in Myeongdong, and finally decided to give this a shot on a night that we were craving BBQ.

Like Haha’s restaurant, it’s not on the first floor, but Kang Ho Dong’s one has a standee of him that is easily spotted. You have to take the lift up in order to reach his restaurant (I can’t recall which floor, have to check the poster there!).

When we reached there, there weren’t many diners yet, just a few tables, all of whom were tourists. It’s not very surprising since Kang Ho Dong’s restaurant should be a staple recommendation in most guide books and websites.

I think the prices are kind of similar to Haha’s restaurant, though I do find Kang Ho Dong’s one to be slightly cheaper. We ordered the Pork Premium Set A and another serving of beef (I can’ remember exactly which one we ordered, it’s either the short ribs or rib-eye).

The order also comes with a serving of steamed egg (see yellow liquid that’s cooking at a corner of the pan), so you don’t have to order it unless you want an extra portion.

I personally liked the meat here even better than the one at Haha’s restaurant (sorry Haha, no hard feelings!) because of the marination. Apparently, the pork served here is actually from Jeju, which also happens to be famous for their barbecued pork. The beef at KHD’s BBQ restaurant is also really delicious, but I didn’t try the beef at Haha’s place, so I can’t really do a fair comparison here for you.

Overall, I have to admit that the meat tastes very good when eaten in winter, and especially after you wash it down with a shot of sweet soju and you are all ready to stuff your mouth with the next portion of meat. Do remember to order some soju, beer or cider when you are eating KBBQ, because it will definitely enhance the eating experience!

All the staff here can speak Chinese. I don’t know if it’s coincidence or specially picked to cater to tourists in Myeongdong, but I guess it is comforting to be able to converse easily if you are able to communicate in Chinese. I think they are also able to speak in English – have vague memories of them communicating to non-Chinese diners. They are not the most friendly or polite, but the least they’ll do for you is help you to make sure your meat is properly cooked – fair enough, I guess.

My final verdict? This is great, and the prices are actually also quite reasonable when you split it across a few people. We really did eat quite a lot of meat for a fair amount of money, and it is always satisfying to be so well-fed. I might come back here the next time just to try their side menu dishes! They all look so delicious, but were apparently sold out before nighttime, so I’m guessing they must be a big hit among other customers.
