Melbourne has no lack of cafés, especially in the CBD. However, this was one that drew an exceptional amount of crowds that left me a bit stunned.
Granted we visited on a weekend where everyone seemed to want brunch, but I was surprised we had to wait for at least 15-20 minutes for a table. There were quite a number of groups waiting outside the café and I heard most of them even made prior reservations.
The space itself is actually pretty big since it used to be a furniture warehouse, and I saw that every table inside was occupied. So I’m pretty sure it’s not that the café is too small – it’s just really very popular. While I used to think that was a good sign that the café must be pretty good, I think otherwise now that I’m travelling and dining with a baby.

Safe to say that when we finally got a table, I was famished.
I had the Big Brekkie Platter (AUD 26) that came with fried eggs, Spanish chorizo, hash brown, roasted tomato, spinach, mushroom w/ sourdough toast. I also ordered an extra side of halloumi (AUD 5). On the other hand, my husband had the Krimper Burger (AUD 24). This burger came with Wagyu Beef, truffle aioli, caramelised onion, American cheese, cos lettuce, pickle, beetroot relish w/ fries.
Drinks-wise, I ordered the Yuzu Espresso Soda (AUD 9) and my husband the Iced Chai Latte (AUD 7).
The drinks were served very promptly so we looked forward to getting our food asap. Unfortunately, that was far from the reality. By the time we had finished feeding our baby her solids (which, as any parent would tell you, can take forever because they are so distracted), our food still had not arrived! I was a bit miffed that they sat so many patrons down at the table but so many of us only had no drinks and no food.
I think we waited for about 30 minutes before we finally got our food. Yikes.
As you can see, the Big Brekkie Platter is REALLY big. Like really big. The biggest big breakfast I’ve ever had at a café.

I wasn’t a fan of the chorizo and found it a tad dry. The halloumi were also a tinge too salty for my liking. However, the rest of the ingredients were actually pretty good, albeit a little oily. I sat down feeling extremely hungry, but I sure was full by the time I had cleared everything off my plate.
The yuzu espresso soda was not outstanding by any means. That being said, it was a nice refreshing drink to have while we waited for our food to come.
While I really enjoyed the food at Krimper Cafe, the waiting time was too atrociously long and the service very slow. We were pretty lucky that our baby didn’t fuss too much while we wolfed down our food, but it’s not a situation you want to be caught up in if you’re planning to bring your kids here.
Would I dine again at Krimper Cafe if I head back to Melbourne? Maybe. I might try my luck on a weekday instead and see if the crowds remain so thick and the service so slow. But weekends? Hard pass.
