Onedang Gamjatang (Myeongdong 1)

, , ,

I’m back with another review of a restaurant in Myeongdong: Onedang Gamjatang (Myeongdong 1)!

If you are wondering why I’m always talking about things to eat in Myeongdong, that’s because I always stay in this area during my Korea trips. It’s really convenient for tourists, + I have member’s discount for Skypark Myeongdong!

On that note, because I usually stay at Skypark Central Myeongdong, I’ve always noticed this particular restaurant right across our hotel. Apparently it’s been featured in TV shows (SBS?), so I guess it may be famous.

Now, while it’s not exactly located in the prime shopping area, I have to admit that its location is super good, because I’ve seen a lot of hotel guests duck straight into here, especially in the cold winter months.

And guess what? We ended up being one of those people as well!

Menu

The restaurant was cosy enough, and has a pretty decent seating capacity. We ordered the following:

Stir-fried spicy pork hot pot (7000 won)
Samgyetang (14 000 won)
Korean pancake (13 000 won)

My honest review? These really weren’t great.

My spicy pork hot pot was rather disappointing. It looked nothing like the photo on the menu.

The amount of stew and amount of meat they put in this can definitely be improved on, and I felt it was too a little too spicy for me. I think most of what I ate were vegetables (if I remember correctly, a lot of tomatoes). I definitely expected a lot more stew/soup in this dish.

The samgyetang was decent. However, it paled in comparison to the one from Tosokchon, even though it only costs 1000 won less than its famed counterpart.

I know some people don’t really understand the hype behind Tosokchon, but once you’ve tried samgyetang from other restaurants, you’ll truly understand. The pancake was also just so-so – good to eat, but nothing really spectacular. Tosokchon’s is fluffy, chewy, and very satisfying, while Onedang Gamjatang’s is flatter and more bland.

Granted, we didn’t really order Onedang Gamjatang’s specialty dishes (Pork bone & potato soup), but even their recommended pancake wasn’t amazing. That tells a lot.

I see that this restaurant has gotten rather good ratings and reviews on TripAdvisor, so maybe it’s just us who weren’t impressed with this.

It’s a convenient place to eat at, but I think for the prices they charge and the taste they deliver, you definitely have much better choices elsewhere in Myeongdong where you should spend those won & calories at.

About Me

Hi! I’m Tofu V from Singapore.

My love for Korea stemmed from a love of K-pop and K-dramas that started more than a decade ago. I’ve been fortunate enough to visit Korea both as a tourist and a student. I’ve accumulated interesting experiences (mostly good, occasionally bad) along the way as I try my best to see as much of Korea as possible, and this blog is an accumulation of all that I’ve learned and tried.
