Many Singaporeans who enjoy café hopping in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, would surely have heard of Space Cafe, and likely even visited it before.
If you’re looking for an aesthetic specialty coffee place during your JB trip, this is the place to visit.
Space Cafe is actually located near KSL City Mall, at the ground level of Holiday Villa Johor Bahru City Centre. We actually first discovered this café precisely because we were staying at the hotel!
It’s very easy to spot from afar, thanks to its clean minimalistic look. Think white walls, glass doors, and soft lights!
They serve the usual café fare with a good mix of coffees, teas, and pastries. However, what they are really famous for are their unique specialty coffee creations:

We visited Space Café a few times, so we did manage to try out different drinks over the trips!
These were the Orange Americano and Caramel Cinnamon Cafe Latte:

As the name suggests, the Orange Americano is a cold brew blended with orange juice, topped with a slice of dried orange – mainly for the aesthetic.
I’m a huge fan of orange coffees, which was actually a drink I first discovered from Luckin Coffee. The single origin espresso shot and orange juice pair very well together as they have varying levels of sourness. This is made even better with a slight sweet edge from the orange juice.
Space Café’s Orange Americano comes with a thick layer of lime milk foam that adds a nice layer of zesty flavour to the drink. Top it off with fresh orange juice and you get one of the best Orange Americanos I have ever tasted.

I also appreciate that they provide a small espresso shot glass for you to sip on the single origin Ethopian coffee, as the flavour does get buried under the stronger citrus taste.

On another trip, we had their pastries and I paired it with their matcha. Their Japanese drink options are all made with Niko Neko matcha powder.
I thought the matcha was fairly ok but the matcha-milk ratio was a bit off. Either that or the milk wasn’t great, so I didn’t enjoy it as much as their coffee.
The pastries were fairly decent too. Not particularly delicious, but a nice to have if you’re feeling hungry and want some quick bites.

I find that Space Cafe does their coffee better than any other item on their menu. Not a bad thing!
This time I ordered the Prugna Cold Brew Coffee. It’s pretty similar to the Orange Americano, except that now it’s made with prugna (plum) juice.
It’s sweeter than the Orange Americano and comes with a tart aftertaste. Not bad, but I still prefer the orange flavours with my coffee.

I think this was their S.O.E taster or their espresso (can’t remember). It is a menu item for those who just want to enjoy their specialty coffee black and unadulterated.
Again, major props to their plating and attention to detail! You can tell that the staff really know their beans and encourage customers to enjoy their coffee as well.

We also tried the Caramel Biscotti Coffee on a separate occasion. This is a very Instagrammable coffee creation that a lot of people tend to order.
I can’t find my photo of it at the moment, but we all agreed that it was WAY too sweet for our liking.
Space Cafe also sells their coffee beans at a pretty affordable price. Be sure to buy some back if you enjoy their coffee!
