ST. ALi Coffee Roasters: Melbourne’s trendy brunch & specialty coffee

, , ,

One cannot talk about specialty coffee and brunch in Melbourne without making mention of ST. ALi. Arguably the pinnacle of café culture in the city, they’ve since expanded out to even Bali!

However, we knew that we had to try the OG café for ourselves right in South Melbourne.

What to eat and drink at ST. ALi Coffee Roasters

It was a long tram ride from Melbourne’s CBD to ST. ALi, but the sunny weather was fantastic for lifting our spirits.

The café is located within an alley so there’s a fair bit of walking involved, but it’s easily recognisable by the blue outdoor seating.

We opted to sit inside as the sunlight got rather glaring as noon approached.

We were mildly surprised to find the inside of ST. ALi completely packed – clearly hadn’t anticipated that they would be such a popular brunch spot!

However, take note that as with a lot of dining establishments in Melbourne, there tends to be a surcharge on public holidays. The 13% service charge also took us by surprise as it definitely makes the bill much heftier.

What we ate at ST. ALi Coffee Roasters

From what I understand, ST. ALi changes up their menu periodically.

I got a seasonal coffee so it’s not available at the moment, but the rest of the items were Tokyo Omelette (AUD 29), Dirty Eggs (AUD 32), and a good old Batch Brew (AUD 7).

What we ate at ST. ALi Melbourne
Dirty Eggs (AUD 32)

I had the Dirty Eggs. This dish is described on the menu as potato gems, braised red peppers, fried chorizo, poached eggs, potato foam, and potato crisp.

I found it a tad strange that a dish that features so many potato parts is named after eggs instead. But I’m not complaining because I’m a huge potato lover!

At this point, I have to commend the staff for their attentiveness to detail and fantastic customer service. We mentioned to one of the staff that I would like my poached eggs fully cooked (pregnancy woes). And he immediately asked if I was expecting! I was pretty surprised that he caught on so quickly. He even congratulated us and made sure to inform the kitchen of my special order.

The dish was oddly satisfying for one that could potentially be overwhelmed by all that potato business. The sauce had a sharp tangy flavour that really whetted my appetite. I believe it might be made from red bell peppers and/or tomatoes!

On the other hand, my partner was not so satisfied by his Tokyo Omelette. The name is also misleading as it is actually a combination of smoked eel, pickled enoki mushroom, nori & bonito, flake butter. No eggs involved lol. He found the portions rather lacking, especially at its price point.

Now you know that ST. ALi is well-known for none other than coffee, and I was really excited to try it. Melbourne honestly has no lack of great coffee – I’ve enjoyed most of my coffees on this trip.

The brews at ST. ALi, however, are truly in a league of their own. The profiles are strong and distinct, which I felt a bit guilty about indulging in because I was pregnant! I also have to give props to their extensive and creative coffees. They offer something for every taste bud, be it the fun fruity flavours or perky alcoholic options.

Is it worth eating at ST. ALi Coffee Roasters?

I’m a little skeptical of highly-raved food places but too curious not to give these places a shot. There are some that really disappoint, and I was afraid that ST. ALi would fall into this group as well.

The coffee served here is undeniably good. In fact, I think that their coffee is really what draws the crowds and what is worth coming all the way here for. Their food can be a bit of a hit-and-miss, which is a bit concerning if you take the high prices into account.

I would certainly love to be back again for their coffees, although I would certainly make sure not to come on a public holiday!

  1. Thank you for sharing! ST. ALi recently opened its first branch in Manila, and your review makes me want to try it (though I’m skeptical of the food, based on what your partner experienced.)

  2. […] A quick search of Melbourne’s best brunch spots will certainly lead to Hardware Société. It sits squarely in the ranks of other names like Humble Rays and ST. ALi Coffee Roasters. […]

  3. […] Ask for food substitutions and modifications: Don’t be shy to ask for your eggs well done or your coffee weak! The café staff in Melbourne were very nice about this (shoutout to Operator25 and ST. ALi Coffee Roasters!) […]

About Me

Hi! I’m Tofu V from Singapore.

My love for Korea stemmed from a love of K-pop and K-dramas that started more than a decade ago. I’ve been fortunate enough to visit Korea both as a tourist and a student. I’ve accumulated interesting experiences (mostly good, occasionally bad) along the way as I try my best to see as much of Korea as possible, and this blog is an accumulation of all that I’ve learned and tried.
