Lune Croissanterie: best croissant in the world?

, , ,

Well-meaning travellers and travel guides will tell you that Melbourne has a croissant shop called Lune Croissanterie that you have to try.

In fact, it’s even been touted by news outlets like The New York Times as the best croissant in the world. That’s definitely a tall order to live up to.

Here’s my review of Lune Croissanterie to help you decide if it’s worth queuing for.

Our Lune Croissanterie review

When I checked the Lune Croissanterie website, I realised that they even encourage customers to pre-order to avoid disappointment.

I didn’t manage to put in an order the day before we were planning to head down to Lune. We also couldn’t wake up early enough (they open at 7.30am) to make sure we were at the start of the queue, so we completely scraped the idea of going.

However, as fate would have it, we were in the vicinity (Melbourne CBD) for some window shopping. It was time for a tea break and the queue seemed decent. With some time to spare, we decided to try our luck and see if we could get our hands on one of the famed croissants.

We queued for about 15 – 20 minutes and finally got to the counter to order. As it was already in the afternoon, they didn’t have a lot of options left.

However, we were lucky that they still had their original croissant, as well as their other famed Lemon Curd Cruffin. We also ordered their coffees to go with our pastries.

It was also then I realised that the whole shop was PACKED. Literally packed from in every corner, because the shop doesn’t have seats – only tables for customers to stand around.

Their pastries are freshly made so you may have to wait a while. Thankfully, the wait wasn’t too long.

By looks alone, you can already tell that the croissant already looks amazing. It is polished with a touch of gloss from the butter and well-layered flakes.

Definitely Insta-worthy

I wouldn’t call myself a croissant connoisseur, but I’ve eaten my fair share of croissants. This one from Lune is everything you want in a croissant: fragrant, buttery, and flakey. It’s not soft and oily, which you get from using too much butter during baking.

The Lemon Curd Croffin was denser than the croissant, but the taste was refreshingly different. Made with house-made lemon curd, citrus sugar, and candied lemon zest, it’s the perfect pick-me-up.

P.S. if you’re wondering what a croffin is, it’s a cross between a croissant and a muffin!

I personally liked the Lemon Curd Croffin more than the original croissant (oops), but it’s really down to preference!

As the shop is really small, one unique aspect is that you actually get to watch the whole baking process!

Looking at the perfectly-shaped croissants and buttery goodness really makes you appreciate the amount of effort they put into their pastries.

While we enjoyed the pastries, I found their coffees quite lacking and a little on the expensive side.

Is Lune Croissanterie worth eating at?

I definitely recommend checking out the croissants and croffins at Lune Croissanterie, but will give their coffees a miss.

While I do think the croissant is one of the best I’ve had thus far, I’m not sure if I’ll go as far as to solidify its reputation as the best in the world.

Had the queue been any longer, I would definitely have given this a miss.

I’m also not sure if I’ll go back to Lune Croissanterie on future trips, considering that there are no seats and it i s always so incredibly crowded.

Hi! I’m Tofu V from Singapore.

My love for Korea stemmed from a love of K-pop and K-dramas that started more than a decade ago. I’ve been fortunate enough to visit Korea both as a tourist and a student. I’ve accumulated interesting experiences (mostly good, occasionally bad) along the way as I try my best to see as much of Korea as possible, and this blog is an accumulation of all that I’ve learned and tried.
