Chapel Street Cafe: relaxing Penang café with delicious fare

, , ,

The first thing we did after touching down in Penang and checking into our hotel was none other than having brunch at Chapel Street Cafe.

This café was highly recommended by a few food bloggers, so we wanted to see if it would live up to the hype.

It’s a little tough to reach if you’re going by public transport. I highly recommend getting there by taxi or Grab! In fact, we got around Penang most of the time by Grab as it’s very convenient to book, and also pretty affordable.

I was pleasantly surprised by how aesthetic this café was. I think they were going for a little of the industrial feel but they added some green touches here & there. Add the glass windows that filtered in bright light, and you get a very comfortable dining space.

What to order at Chapel Street Cafe

Brilliant café ambience aside, the food should definitely be the highlight of any café experience, and we were certainly not disappointed!

You can find the full Chapel Street Cafe menu on their Facebook page, but I’ll share snippets of it here:

As you can see, they offer quite standard café fare in terms of the food, but they do have some snazzy drink options! I’ve only included some of their coffees & smoothies here, but their full menu also includes other chillers.

I think they’ve revamped their menu since the last time we visited in 2022. The main essentials in their breakfast options are still there though! You can also opt to create your own breakfast plate with these ingredients.

What really impressed me was how generous they were with the amount of food served for the priced charged. At SGD 10 (less than USD 10), we were getting a full, hearty brunch plate!

For a similar breakfast place, we would have expected to pay about SGD 20 – 30 in Singapore, for almost 2 to 3 times the price.

Their sourdough was just the right amount of chewy and paired very nicely with the scrambled eggs and smoked salmon.

I really appreciated how generous they were with the smoked salmon portions!

Now for their coffee!

I can’t remember exactly what this was, but I vaguely remember it was very strong. It might have been a black with two espresso shots, with a good frothy layer of crema.

If you find the coffee too strong, you can wait for the ice cubes to melt and dilute the espresso shots. I found that there was still quite a good caffeine kick even after the ice has melted.

Very aesthetic background for very aesthetic coffee photos

The café does attract quite a few customers, but it doesn’t get too crowded or noisy. It’s a very nice place to chill and hangout if you have time to spare. It also helps that the café provides free WiFi and charging points!

We really enjoyed having our brunch here at this café. I know most people would head straight for the street food and hawker fare in Penang. However, the café scene in this Malaysian city is also pretty lively and definitely worth checking out!

Hi! I’m Tofu V from Singapore.

My love for Korea stemmed from a love of K-pop and K-dramas that started more than a decade ago. I’ve been fortunate enough to visit Korea both as a tourist and a student. I’ve accumulated interesting experiences (mostly good, occasionally bad) along the way as I try my best to see as much of Korea as possible, and this blog is an accumulation of all that I’ve learned and tried.
